Ever since we were little kids, we all heard "Put on a jacket or you'll catch a cold!". It was so common to remain in a constant state of warm homeostasis that we brought this habit into our adulthood and passed it onto our kids.
What if I told you that regularly exposing yourself to the cold is actually the best thing you can do for your immune system?
Now what if I told you it's not only is it great for your immune system, but also amazing for your endocrine system (hormones), cardiovascular system, and concentration, among others?
It's a part of this simple, yet incredibly effective practice developed by a crazy guy with an undeniable purpose from the Netherlands named Wim Hof, and it is appropriately called the Wim Hof Method.
I trained under Wim Hof in November, learned the 3 pillars of the method, and applied it to my every day life. I can confidently say that it was the best thing I have ever done for my mind and body.
Here are the three pillars and what they do:
Thru cold exposure, the right mindset, and a certain breathing pattern, we are able to influence and control our endocrine, cardiovascular, and immune systems.
Think of your endocrine system, cardiovascular system, and immune system as muscles.
What happens when you don't regularly stimulate a muscle? It weakens.
The same principle applies to these systems. When you expose yourself to the cold, you are stimulating these systems.
Here's what happens to these systems when you implement the Wim Hof Method:
The endocrine system releases norepinephrine & adrenaline. Regular production of these hormones results in a happier and more clear state of mind. The more the endocrine system is stimulated, the more of these "feel good" hormones are produced and released into the body.
When thrust into tactical situations unprepared, our endocrine system also releases these hormones. Regularly releasing these hormones into your body helps you understand how to handle them better, so when you are thrust into a situation like this, you have complete control over how these hormones effect your behavior. This can make all of the difference is a situation like this where untrained minds can make a deadly mistake.
The cardiovascular system shunts blood away from the extremities and into the vital organs by constricting peripheral blood vessels when exposed to cold; when you warm back up, the blood vessels dilate and release blood back. The walls of your blood vessels are muscular, so like any other muscle, it strengthens and builds the more it is engaged.
This results in a stronger cardiovascular system, which lowers your heart rate, levels out your blood pressure, and allows for more blood to enter the brain. Improved brain blood flow results in improved focus, concentration, and awareness, to name a few.
During tactical situations, finely tuning these senses can give you the edge over your opponent you need to succeed.
The immune system is comprised of many different organs and systems, it is not one system in itself. Having that said, it is mainly an inflammatory response. Basically, when alerted, the immune system releases a large amount of inflammatory proteins, resulting in the symptoms we feel when we become sick.
Now when we combine this cold exposure with the other 2 components of the Wim Hof Method, we are able to manipulate our endocrine system into producing more of a stress hormone called cortisol. When released, cortisol reduces the immune system's inflammatory response, which suppresses symptoms yet still allows the white blood cells to do their work.
In a tactical situation, being able to control our stress hormones is greatly beneficial. Also being able to focus on a symptom such as sneezing or coughing to make it go away can make all the difference if you are trying to not give away your position to the enemy.
There is so much more to this Method, this is a very brief breakdown of a revolutionary step in human history.
This is an excellent method for any tactical situation, as it leads to even greater control over the mind. As we all know, weak minds can turn controlled situations into our of control situations, fast.

fully understand the method and how to carry it out before attempting it. Hypothermia and frostbite are a real thing if you go in with ego and inexperience.
